Volunteers are essential for Urban Harvest to fullfill its mission. Whether as a Farmers Market assistant or volunteering at a school garden build, we need your help! Please read the individual volunteer and group volunteer descriptions below.
INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We have many volunteer areas for individuals, as listed below. Pick the area in which you would like to volunteer, and then fill out the form at the bottom of this page. An Urban Harvest representative will contact you to place you.
Individual Volunteers: Find a community garden in your area. Volunteers are always needed and welcome, no experience necessary.
After School Garden Assistant: Assist our garden educators to teach Houston area school children at one of our youth partner sites. Volunteer as a weekly assistant or for specific activities like cooking demos or garden maintenance. The after-school times usually run from 3-5 pm or 4-6pm (approx. 2.5 hrs each class).
Dig It Day Volunteer: Join us for regular workdays throughout the school year to help build and maintain school gardens. We will include you in our school garden email list and will email you when we have a garden work day scheduled. (Approx. 2-3 hrs each build.)
Classes Helper: Serve as an assistant with set-up, breakdown and other duties - get a free class as a benefit!
Farmers Market Assistant: Assist with on-site logistics, special events and promotion of Urban Harvest during the market. Spend time with garden experts at the greeter's booth, meet your farmer and learn more about the organization. Volunteer Shifts at the market are Saturday's: 7am-10am & 11am-1pm.
Fruit Tree Sale
Various Volunteer Roles: The annual Fruit Tree Sale relies on the support of hundreds of volutneer to ensure the distribution of more than 3,000 fruit trees. Volunteers assist in all aspects of the event from unloading trees to sales to clean up. Get access to the pre-order site as a benefit!
Earth Day Workday
Workday Volunteer: Help community gardens throughout the Greater Houston area realize large-scale projects that they could not otherwise accomplish. Projects may include replacing garden beds, mulching pathways, planting fruit trees, building picnic tables and much more.
