How Can I Help Support the Growth of Farmers Markets in Houston?
Take time to visit and enjoy the local markets.
Talk to your friends and neighbors about the difference in farm fresh produce and the week-old selections that you see in the grocery stores. Understand the difference between a "peddlers' market" that resells produce from out of state, and a true farmers market that puts you "face to face" with the person that grew and harvested the food you are about to eat. You can make a difference.
The local growers need our support - they must have a ready and willing outlet for the vast quantities of produce that is possible. If they can't sell it - why grow it? Ask your local restaurant where they buy their produce, and are they willing to look for local growers when possible They must be able to make a living, and the effort to grow year round is a great commitment of time and resources in land and equipment. We at the Bayou City Farmers Market realize that public interest and buying power will make the markets successful, but it will take time.
Donate money and make a financial commitment to underwrite the green market program. For more information about how you can make a fresh difference, please call Urban Harvest at 713-880-5540.
If you are interested in volunteering at the market please e-mail Julia Trainer, our market manager.
