Kids Market Goes On!
Our Kid-grown, kid-sold market was held despite the unusual chilly weather for April! We would like to thank the students, teachers and parents for participating in a celebration of local food and environmental stewardship!
Culinary Arts Students with Stephanie Roberts, Garden Educator (second r), from Hogg MS. Their freshly made sweet and spicy dill pickles made under the direction of Janay Goodeman, Culinary Arts Teacher, (not pictured) were still warm. Principal Sugurak donated her family backyard chicken eggs for the students to take to market along with their Cultivated Classroom Garden Produce.
"The kids are our future stewards and this is imortant for healthy communities." shared a market customer in why she came out to support the Kids Market!
This farmers market was run entirely by kids and students sold lettuce mix, carrots, mustard greens, herbs, kale, and lots of big bountiful chard. St. Catherine's Montessori environemental teachers, brought their kid market team to sell their hand-made soap and body care products along with their organic produce. Westside HS students created seasonal recipes and prepared creamy chard soup to help us warm up on the chilly day along with the superman of all vegetables, sweet potatoes lightly sweetened and stewed in cinnimon and star anise. All proceeds are sown back into the school gardens and culinary programs to promote experiential learning opportunities for students. Mark your calendars for this time next year, when we will be back for Kids Market 2019!
Lantrip Elementary brought an outstanding team of teachers, students and parents to showcase their veggie transplants. Lantrip ES is an environmental science magnet school in HISD with a state of the art greenhouse, school gardens and orchard.
Lisa Green, Magnet Coordinator and Science Teachers stepped back and coached from the sidelines as the students developed their communication skills with market goers.
This 3-hour Professional Development workshop will provide classroom teachers, parents, and garden coordinators with hands-on experience that will help you use your Outdoor Classroom as an exciting educational tool.
